Tauranga Slow Food

Tauranga Slow Food – Appreciating Food from the Beginning to the End!

The Slow Food movement started in Italy in 1986, mainly as a backlash to fast food.  It’s about getting back to the basics of caring where food comes from and the enjoyment of preparing it and cooking it yourself.  Our lives are now so hectic, it’s good to take the time to cook and enjoy a meal with your family and friends, even just one day a week.

The movement encourages us to source food locally and to eat food that is in season, something which is becoming more important in these days of climate change and caring about our carbon footprint.  There are also enormous health benefits to eating seasonal food which you have grown and cooked yourself, because it is fresher and you can control what fertilisers, pesticides or additives are used.  It’s about appreciating food from the beginning to the end.

Tauranga Slow Food has been slowly and quietly growing in size since it first started as a ‘convivium’ of five people back in 2007.  Past events have included pot luck lunches, relish making workshops and cooking demonstrations.

Degustation Dinner

On 1st August, Tauranga Slow Food is holding its second ‘Degustation Dinner’ at the BOP Polytechnic’s Atrium Restaurant.

‘Degustation’ means ‘a careful appreciative tasting of various foods’ and the evening begins at 6pm with canapés and a glass of mulled wine, followed by a seven course dinner, using locally sourced produce, prepared by three top local chefs: James Broad of Cuisine Concepts, Peter Blakeway of Deli on Devonport and BOP Polytechnic’s Hospitality Tutor, Lee Pearce, assisted by hospitality students from the Polytechnic.

There will be a cash bar with wine, beer and juice available on the night.  Tickets for the dinner cost $85 and are available from Bel Mondo at 68 St John Street, Deli on Devonport at 22 Devonport Road & Good Earth Organics at 5 Merivale Street, Tauranga or by emailing taurangaslowfood@gmail.com.  Ticket sales are limited and close July 27th (if not sold out prior.)

For those budding chefs, there is also an opportunity to get hands-on experience behind the scenes of a commercial kitchen, whilst also learning tips and skills from the professionals, by registering for ‘Chef for a Day’ tickets at $40, although places are limited.

Tauranga Slow Food AGM

On Thursday 10th September at 5.30pm at the Deli on Devonport, Tauranga Slow Food will be holding its AGM.  Please feel free to come along, learn more about Slow Food and share your ideas for upcoming events.  There will be a complimentary glass of wine and nibbles, so please RSVP your attendance by Monday 7th September to taurangaslowfood@gmail.com.
